This is the second part of shopping guide for choosing a baby strollers or prams.
There are too many small designs for baby strollers. When we choose a pushchair, we always make a variety of choices in each function. Therefore, we finally make clear our rigid and soft requirements, and list all the functions for comparison. It is also recommended that parents can list all kinds of functions like ours, and make the best choices.
The size of the awning is related to the scope of shading and windproof effect.
At present, there are mainly two kinds of canopies, full-canopy and half-canopy. There is also a specially designed parasol that can be fixed on the frame. It can adjust the direction and height. The advantage is that it can grasp the direction of sunshine and be more ventilated. Some brands of awnings also have UV resistance function.
Personally, I think the full canopy is better than the half canopy.
The seat cushion is directly in contact with the baby. In general, full-sized stroller cushions are thicker and more spacious. And the cushions of lightweight umbrellas usually have a single layer of fabric.
For within 6-month-old infants, you can choose a stroller with a backrest that can be adjusted to 175 degrees. Babies need to lie flat. For older, you can choose a pram with the backrest that babies can sit on.
The backrest of the umbrellas is usually fixed or small-range adjustment. It is generally a thin layer or a mesh design, which is more suitable for summer.
4. Handles and reversing
The handles can be divided into fixed direction and dual directions. For dual direction prams, there are two ways to change direction: one is to reverse the handle and the other is to reverse the seat.
I prefer to changing seat rather than changing handlebar, because I think it will be safer for kids.
Reversing the handle will have the risk of pinching your child’s arms and fingers, it is a small accident, but is dangerous and cannot be ignored!
Some people think that it is too much trouble to take the child out when the seat is reversing, but I don’t think it is often happened when actually using it. After all, the safety of the child must be the first one to consider. Of course, it is more convenient to change the handle of the pushchair. And it is suitable for those fitness moms who often exercise with the baby after reversing. But just remember to pay attention to the safety.
Also, about the height of stroller handle, you need to know that, some of them can be adjusted, some are fixed. Adjustable height can adapt to the height of different person, and it will be more comfortable to push.
5. How To fold
As far as safety is concerned, folding structure is an important part of prams. Many safety problems are caused by sudden failure of folding structure. In view of this point, the testing of the folding structure is quite rigorous, and it will be more secure to choose the quality-assured and well-known brands strollers.
Here are 3 ways to fold:
a. Stand after folded front & back
Usually it is a full-sized stroller, which is a square shape after folded. For example, Aprica Soraria needs to work with both hands. Of course, there are many brands that support one-click collection.
b. First folded left & right then up & down
Usually it is an umbrella stroller which is slender after folding. The advantage is that most of them can be closed with one hand, and the size is small after folding. The shortcoming is that it cannot stand and need to lean against the wall. For example, Maclaren, the originator of the umbrellas.
c. Folded front & back
After folding, the size is appropriate, can be carried on the shoulders. The popular design, like GB Hummingbird, but at the same time the disadvantages are more obvious for the frame is less stable.
Don’t underestimate this feature, because in real life, we never know if we have spare hands when taking care of babies outside. Nowadays self-driving tour with a baby or waiting for the bus with a baby, one hand holds the baby and one hand takes the pushchair is the essential skill for the parents.
Each folding methods have its own advantage and disadvantage, it mainly depends on our actual needs to balance the pros and cons.
Frame Material: The iron frame is relatively heavier; the aluminum frame is lighter.
7. Seat belt
Any baby stroller must have a seat belt!
The seat belt is really important. Just like a car safety seat, you never know when the accident happens and if it can protect our kids well.
There are currently three types of seat belts: a five-point seat belt system, a three-point seat belt system, and a two-point seat belt system.
It goes without saying that the five-point safety belt is a relatively safe restraint belt system; for the two-point safety belt system, the baby is easy to slide out of the prams because it does not have a straddle belt; and the three-point safety belt has no shoulder belt, when it encounters an external force impact, a child can easily be thrown out of a seat belt while sitting.
8. Front guardrail
Like the seat belt, the front guardrail can protect the child from falling. It is better to choose a detachable one. When the baby is older, it can be removed when the seat space is too small. It can also be used with dishes, etc.
9. Storage basket
Usually under the strollers, to put some baby bottles, milk powder, diapers, etc. For the storage basket, it is the bigger the better, the parent don’t need to carry too much on their shoulders.
10. Shock absorber
Why emphasize shock absorber? Because for a newborn, it takes take a long time to grow and strengthen the bones and muscles, and it is particularly easy to be injured in collisions and uncontrolled head movement.
Compared to the rest of the body, the head is large and heavy, accounting for about 1/4 of the total length and 1/3 of the total weight.
Therefore, for babies who often need to go outside, great shock absorbers are very important, which is also a point we need to pay more attention to when we choose a pram.
Commonly, there are 3 shock absorption design as below:
a. The wheel
Baby strollers with large wheels have better shock absorption performance than those with small wheels, especially pneumatic tires, which have excellent shock absorption effect.
Of course, the material of this pneumatic rubber tire is also very important, which is directly relates to the cost, and the wear-resisting and shock-absorbing effect of the tire with pattern is better than that without pattern. After all, every extra penny deserves its value.
b. Spring shock absorption
Most strollers come with shock absorbing springs but the results are various.
Some baby prams will be equipped with fake shock absorbers to attract consumers’ attention. The effect is bad. So please ask carefully and purchase a brand pushchair!
C. Frame Shock absorbers
This kind of design is relatively rare, the whole frame is a bow frame. And the frame itself can play a very good shock absorption performance, like the Ubest stroller.
The baby is more comfortable to go through some uneven grounds with the great shock absorption pushchairs. And it is also easy to judge the damping of a baby stroller. It mainly depends on the weight of the stroller, followed by the wheel. When choosing the prams, lightly presses the frame to test its elasticity to make sure the wheel shock absorption is good.
11. Brake device
The brakes solve the potential danger: when the stroller stops on a tilted road surface, it will slip away without attention.
The common brake device is divided into one foot double brake and single brake. Of course, one foot double brake is safer and more stable than single brake.
When selecting a stroller, you need to check its brake system for security carefully. Also, the brake part of the stroller must be clearly marked to avoid misuse.
12. Strollers attachments / accessories
Prams accessories can be selected according to usage habits or local environmental conditions.
Mat: In the summer, you can consider using a mat, otherwise it is very hot
Dinner Plate: Can be placed in front of the seat.
Cup holder: Can be placed on the side of the frame to put drinks or small items.
Rain cover: In case of rainy weather, it can be fully covered.
Mosquito-proof cover: It can prevent mosquito bites in the summer.
So when we know about the details or different functions of a stroller, we can make the best choice to get a baby prams for our babies or kids, if you still have no idea what brand or what types is the best, maybe we can give you some advice to help you make the decision in the next part.
