Everybody knows that a human baby is called an infant. A young infant is a newborn. But do you have any idea about baby animal names? Sure, we all know that a baby cat is called a kitten, a baby deer is a fawn, and some might even know that a baby goat is called a kid. But some names are truly weird and cute. Here’s a list of 29 of baby animal names. Find out what just about every juvenile animal is called.

1. baby fox

A baby fox is called a Kit, Pup or Cub.

Foxes are members of the dog family. A female fox is called a “vixen”, a male fox is called a “dog fox” or a “tod”. A group of foxes is called a “skulk” or a “leash”.

2. baby deer

A young deer is called Fawn, Kid or Calf.

Deer are a group of even-toed ungulate mammals. They form the family Cervidae. A male deer is called stag or buck, a female deer is called doe or hind, and a young deer is called fawn, kid or calf. There are about 60 species of deer.

3. baby horse

A baby horse is called a Foal.

Some people think a baby horse is called a pony. In fact, A baby horse is called a foal. A foal is a horse that is younger than one year old. A pony can be any age!

4. baby hawk

A baby hawk, eagle, or falcon too young to leave the nest is called an Eyas.

Or you could call it a “chick” or “hatchling” – these words apply to all baby birds (chick) and any baby animals-that-lays-eggs (hatchling).

5. baby falcon

A baby hawk or falcon can be called an Eyas or Eyass, although the term has a more specific meaning in falconry (a baby raptor taken from the nest before fledging for training). When a nestling gets its flight feathers and is ready to leave the nest, but is still dependent on its parents, it becomes a fledgling.

A general (non-breed specific) baby turtle is called a Hatchling.

Hatchling is most often used for a young bird, tadpoles, newts and new born baby turtles. When they are still in shell, a group of hatchlings is called a clutch. If they have been born, a group of them are called a bale. A bale of hatchlings will grow into a bale of yearlings (juveniles).

Baby birds are called hatchlings and may also be generally referred to as chicks. Depending on their stage of development, young birds may be further classified into hatchlings, fledglings or nestlings. When these young birds are hatched, most of them are naked and unable to see with their closed eyes.

A male turkey is called a tom or a gobbler, a female turkey a hen. And a young male turkey is called a jake and a young female is called a jenny. A group of wild turkeys is called a flock, a group of domesticated turkeys is commonly referred to as a rafter.

A baby wolf is called Pup.

Typically, a litter has four to six pups, which are called litter mates. Wolves live in family groups called packs, usually consisting of a male and female parent and their pups. Wolf pups weigh just 1 pound when they are born, but they grow quickly.

A baby eagles is called Eaglet.

Female eagles lay 1 to 3 eggs at a time. Most eaglets are ready to leave the nest and go hunting when they are 4-6 months old. Baby eagles learn to fly when they are only 2 months old. The parents will stay together their entire lives and have more children when all the eaglets fly away and begin living in their own nests.

A baby frog is called a Froglet.

Baby toads are called toadlets. A tadpole (also called a pollywog) is the larval stage in the life cycle of an amphibian, particularly that of a frog or toad. They are usually wholly aquatic, though some species have tadpoles that are terrestrial.

20. baby kangaroo

A baby kangaroo is called a Joey.

Male kangaroos are called bucks, boomers, jacks, or old men; females are does, flyers, or jills; The collective noun for kangaroos is a mob, troop, or court.

21. baby snake

A baby snake is commonly referred to as Snakelet.

Newly born snakes are called neolates, while newly hatched snakes are called hatchlings. A group of snakes is called a nest.

22. baby elephant

A baby elephant is called a Calf.

23. baby sheep

A baby sheep called a Lamb.

A lamb is the term for a sheep, up to about one year old, but usually up to about six months. From one year old to two years, it’s called a hogget. After that, it’s mutton.

Through all of these periods, it’s a sheep. A male sheep is a ram, and a female sheep is a ewe. When the female sheep is ready to be fertilised by the ram, it’s a tup, and the act of fertilisation is tupping.

Baby giraffes are called Calves.

As in cattle, female giraffes are called cows, while the males are called bulls. During birth, the calf will drop to the ground, since mother giraffes give birth standing up.
